How to download, install and activate Windows Server 2025 Standard

1. Windows Server 2025 Standard Overview

Windows Server 2025 Standard is designed for physical or minimally virtualised server environments. It provides a secure and scalable platform for running business applications, managing users and devices, hosting files, deploying virtual machines and supporting hybrid cloud workloads.

Windows Server 2025 introduces security, performance and hybrid-cloud improvements while continuing to support familiar server roles such as Active Directory Domain Services, DNS, DHCP, Hyper-V and file services.

During installation, you can choose between the following options:

• Windows Server 2025 Standard: Installs Server Core with a minimal command-line interface and a smaller attack surface.
• Windows Server 2025 Standard with Desktop Experience: Installs the full graphical user interface, including Server Manager.

Choose carefully because Microsoft does not support switching between Server Core and Desktop Experience after installation without performing a clean installation.

2. Windows Server 2025 System Requirements

Before downloading or installing Windows Server 2025 Standard, confirm that your physical server or virtual machine meets the minimum requirements. Actual requirements may be higher depending on the installed roles, applications, workload and number of users.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

• Processor: 1.4 GHz or faster, 64-bit processor compatible with the x64 instruction set.
• Processor features: NX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW and second-level address translation support.
• Memory: At least 2 GB of RAM for Server Core or Desktop Experience. Microsoft recommends additional memory for production workloads.
• Storage: At least 32 GB of available disk space. More space will normally be required for updates, roles, applications, logs and business data.
• Network adapter: Ethernet adapter capable of at least 1 gigabit per second and compatible with the PCI Express architecture specification.
• Display: Super VGA display with a resolution of at least 1024 × 768 when installing Desktop Experience.
• Firmware: UEFI 2.3.1c-based system with Secure Boot support is recommended.
• Security: Trusted Platform Module 2.0 is required for certain security features and secured-core server configurations.

Installation Media Requirements

• A USB flash drive with sufficient capacity for the Windows Server 2025 ISO. A 16 GB or larger USB drive is recommended.
• A working computer for downloading the ISO and preparing the installation media.
• A stable internet connection.
• A backup of any important data stored on the target server.
• A valid Windows Server 2025 Standard product key for activation.

3. How to Download Windows Server 2025 Standard

The correct download method depends on whether you are evaluating Windows Server 2025 or installing a licensed copy.

Option 1: Download the Windows Server 2025 Evaluation ISO

1. Visit the Microsoft Evaluation Center.
2. Select the Windows Server 2025 ISO download option.
3. Complete the required registration details if requested.
4. Choose your preferred language.
5. Download the 64-bit ISO file and save it to your computer.

The Evaluation Center download is intended for testing and evaluation. An evaluation installation may need to be converted to the appropriate licensed edition before it can be activated with a retail or volume licence key.

Option 2: Download Licensed Installation Media

Customers with access to Microsoft licensing services, Visual Studio subscriptions or other authorised distribution channels should obtain their Windows Server 2025 installation media through the relevant account or portal.

4. Create Windows Server 2025 Installation Media

After downloading the ISO, you can mount it directly for a virtual machine or use it to create a bootable USB drive for a physical server.

For a Virtual Machine

1. Create a new virtual machine in Hyper-V or your preferred supported hypervisor.
2. Allocate sufficient processors, memory and storage.
3. Attach the downloaded Windows Server 2025 ISO to the virtual DVD drive.
4. Configure the virtual machine to boot from the ISO.
5. Start the virtual machine and continue to the installation steps below.

For a Physical Server

1. Connect an empty USB flash drive to your computer.
2. Open a trusted bootable-media creation utility.
3. Select the Windows Server 2025 ISO file.
4. Select the correct USB drive as the destination.
5. Choose the appropriate partition scheme for the server firmware, normally GPT for UEFI systems.
6. Start the process and wait until the installation media has been created.
7. Safely eject the USB drive.

5. How to Install Windows Server 2025 Standard

Step 1: Boot From the Installation Media

1. Insert the bootable USB drive into the server or attach the ISO to the virtual machine.
2. Start or restart the system.
3. Open the boot menu or UEFI settings. The required key varies by manufacturer but may be F2, F10, F12, Delete or Esc.
4. Select the USB drive, virtual DVD drive or ISO as the boot device.
5. Wait for Windows Setup to load.

Step 2: Choose the Language and Keyboard Settings

1. Select your installation language.
2. Choose the correct time and currency format.
3. Select your keyboard or input method.
4. Click Next.
5. Click Install now.

Step 3: Enter the Windows Server 2025 Standard Product Key

Enter your valid 25-character product key when requested. You may also be able to continue without entering a key and activate Windows Server after installation.

Step 4: Select the Installation Option

Select the edition that matches your product key and preferred management experience:

• Windows Server 2025 Standard: Server Core installation without the full desktop interface.
• Windows Server 2025 Standard with Desktop Experience: Full graphical interface with Server Manager.

For administrators who prefer a familiar graphical interface, select Windows Server 2025 Standard with Desktop Experience.

Step 5: Accept the Microsoft Licence Terms

1. Review the applicable notices and licence terms.
2. Select the checkbox to accept the terms.
3. Click Next.

Step 6: Choose the Installation Type

For a new installation, select:

Custom: Install Microsoft Server Operating System only

A custom installation does not retain existing files, applications or settings. Back up the server before continuing.

Step 7: Select the Installation Drive

1. Select the drive or partition where Windows Server 2025 will be installed.
2. Create, delete or format partitions only when necessary.
3. Confirm that the correct drive is selected.
4. Click Next.

Step 8: Complete the Installation

Windows Setup will copy the required files, install features and restart the server. Do not remove the installation media until the initial file-copy stage has finished.

Step 9: Set the Administrator Password

1. Create a strong password for the local Administrator account.
2. Confirm the password.
3. Select Finish.

Step 10: Sign In to Windows Server 2025

1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
2. Enter the Administrator password.
3. Allow Server Manager or the Server Core configuration interface to load.

6. How to Activate Windows Server 2025 Standard

Activation confirms that your copy of Windows Server is licensed for use. The correct method depends on whether you installed a licensed edition or the Evaluation edition.

Method 1: Activate Through Settings

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to System > Activation.
3. Select the option to change or enter the product key.
4. Enter your valid Windows Server 2025 Standard product key.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate the server.

Method 2: Activate Using Command Prompt

To install a product key and activate a licensed Windows Server 2025 Standard installation:

1. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as an administrator.

Converting Windows Server 2025 Standard Evaluation

A Windows Server 2025 Standard Evaluation installation cannot always be activated simply by entering a retail product key. You may first need to convert it from the evaluation edition to the licensed Standard edition.

1. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as an administrator.
2. Confirm the currently installed edition:

DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition

3. Check the editions to which the server can be converted:

DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions

4. If ServerStandard appears as a supported target edition, run:

DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

5. Replace the example characters with your valid Windows Server 2025 Standard key.
6. Restart the server when prompted.
7. After restarting, verify the edition and activation status.

7. Windows Server 2025 Post-Installation Checklist

Once Windows Server 2025 Standard is installed and activated, complete the following configuration and security tasks.

1. Rename the server: Assign a clear hostname that follows your organisation's naming conventions.
2. Configure a static IP address: Servers running infrastructure roles should generally use a planned and consistent network configuration.
3. Set the correct time zone: Accurate time settings are important for authentication, logging and scheduled tasks.
